Critter Fun in the Sun!

Just to share that for a quick holiday getaway that includes kids, theme parks and bathtubs that WON'T break the bank, Sunway Lagoon in KL, Malaysia is not a bad idea.

We brought the critters there, together with another family with 2 other critters, for a 4 day 3 night stay in June 2010 and a good time and fond memories were what we brought back. Hooray for budget airlines that get you to the Malaysian capital in just under an hour flying time at really decent rates (we paid something like $300 for 4 of us on Jetstar).

Sunway Lagoon Resort itself was having a good family deal that included breakfast and theme park entrance tickets (3 parks) for a day plus some welcome drinks and a fruit basket thrown in for the Premier Room. Around $1,000 for the 3 night stay. we were most pleased with the renovated rooms we got that faced the water theme park (and a strange dilapidated medieval tower). Brightly themed and spacious, the most important room amenity for us was - the BATHTUB! anyone with critters will understand that bathtubs are the highlight on any family holiday. Breakfast was also a decent array of international delights and local fare (nasi lemak and rendang, oh happiness!).

Our family package included tickets for 3 areas of the theme parks (water, amusement and wildlife parks) for 2 adults and 2 kids. We made a beeline for the park almost directly after breakfast and had to join a snaking queue that was waiting for the park doors to open. When it did, the entry was pretty seamless. The only thing to note though, was that outside food and drinks were not allowed. So we had to gobble up some of the buns we bought and the husband had to cart the mineral water back to the room.

Overall, the critters enjoyed the water park most, for the slides and the wave pool and lazy river, where we could drift, lazily, of course. The wildlife park was good for a quick breeze-through to pet some rabbits, ooh at some monkeys and peer at the somewhat reticent residents in the cages and enclosures. The amusement park was good, mainly as there were very few people there were no queues! At one merry-go-round, the operator turned on the switch and went to make a phone call! It was really too much of a good thing as we stumbled off, dizzy and nauseated.

Besides the water park, do experience the longest suspension bridge in the country (or S.E.A. as they claim). Some in our party were so daunted mid-way through that they were frozen in fear. It took much coaxing to get them to continue on.

As there is an enormous shopping complex annexed to the hotels, getting supplies and food for the critters were not an issue at all. However, so enamoured were we with Papa Rich, a joint for affordable local fare, that we dined there everyday! The curry horfun (rice noodles) and steamed bread were to die for!

Another highly recommended place of interest for the critters would be the Petrosains Science Discovery Centre, housed in  the KLCC. High on interactivity, from the shuttle pod ride in to Lego corners and a simulated helicopter ride to an oil rig exhibit, we found that we really had not enough time, given our 2 hour exploration.

KL Sunway Lagoon still ranks high with our critters in terms of entertainment and enjoyment value. So it might well be on our destination list for next year!

Peace,
Lagoon
